![]() | The intention of this book is to lead the readers to a fundamental understanding of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Readers should be able to acquire a fundamental knowledge that enables them to pursue studies of their own and to cope with some of the most common problems, such as image contrast and artifacts or questions concerning possible hazards to patients. The first edition of this book was published in 1984 as the primer for European Magnetic Resonance Forum to teach the basics and some of the applications of MR imaging and MR spectroscopy. Many organizers of other teaching courses and universities the world over have found it valuable for their students. The public reaction to and the reviews of the last edition were extremely positive. The book is very popular with radiologists, cardiologists, medical students and radiographers. As with everything in life, MR imaging does not only require knowledge of facts but also background information for decision making. Therefore in this edition some subjective, critical, and opinion-oriented sections are included, intended to offset the technical nature of the book and provide some insights into more practical questions faced by MR users. |

A plethora of scientific publications teaching material, books of abstracts, proceedings of conferences, recommendations for the clinical use of magnetic resonance imaging appeared during the 25 years. An MR dictionary and an overview of indications for MR imaging were published in German. More than 12,000 copies of the teaching software "MR Image Expert" have been distributed worldwide, many of them as insertions of the EMRF Textbooks. The program simulates MR examinations. Originally, the software was developed by Peter A. Rinck and Geir Torheim as a teaching aid for EMRF's courses, but very soon was also used for research and diagnostic purposes (see right column). | |

| Roberto Schubert, radiologist in Berlin, has compiled a comprehensive summary of indications of MR imaging arranged by specialities in twelve chapters for referring physicians. MR procedures are evaluated and compared to other medical imaging techniques. Available in German only. Roberto

2007 marked the 20th anniversary of MR Image Expert. Since the start of its development, more than 12,000 (legal) copies of the magnetic resonance imaging software were distributed worldwide. Originally, the software was developed by Peter A. Rinck and Geir Torheim as a teaching aid for EMRF's courses, but very soon was also used for research and diagnostic purposes. A completely new version will be available in 2012, to celebrate its 25th anniversary. |

| In the introductory description in 1988, the first version of the new software was described as follows: |
| "Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is one of the intellectually most demanding and challenging medical technologies. "Understanding the mechanisms which influence and change image contrast in MR imaging, in particular the relations between image contrast and pulse sequences and their parameters, is difficult and often requires much intuition and imagination. "Teaching tools such as textbooks and slide presentations are used to introduce the newcomer to the field, but the best teacher would be an MRI machine itself. However, learning by experience is time-consuming, expensive, and in cases with human pathology, impossible. "Thus, the next best tool is an MR imaging simulator, a computer program which simulates an MRI machine without performing real examinations. Such a simulator should be as close to reality as possible. MR Image Expert is a computer program which simulates the most important aspects of a magnetic resonance imaging equipment. We have tried to make it as simple to use as possible." |
