EUROPEAN MAGNETIC RESONANCE AWARD

History. Since 1986 EMRF confers the European Magnetic Resonance Award upon those scientists without whom magnetic resonance imaging as a patient- friendly non-invasive diagnostic technology in medicine would not exist.

The award is a crystal owl, representing Athena, the goddess of crafts and skilled peacetime pursuits. She personifies wisdom and rightousness. Thus, the award symbolizes scientific perseverance and knowledge turned into cutting edge results with a direct impact on patient care.

A nominating committee of more than 50 leading European scientists proposes the awardees. Additionally, nominations can be made by anybody in medical imaging or related fields.

Since 1991 two awards are granted, one for advances in medical applications and one for research in basic sciences. Since 1994, the award is bi-annual.

Latest Recipients. In 2008, the recipients are Klaes Golman (Basic Sciences) and Luis Martí-Bonmatí (Medical Sciences).

Klaes Golman has worked within the field of contrast media research for more than 30 years. He has played a decisive role in the research and development of the x–ray contrast media Omnipaque and Visipaque.

From 1988-2006 Golman worked as professor in Experimental Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Lund, Sweden, and as General Manager of the Malmø-based research satellite of Nycomed, Amersham and GE.

He has been the main inventor and driving force behind the hyperpolarized 13-C MR imaging technology and has written 140 scientific papers and earned 35 international patents. He has been invited speaker at more than 40 conferences, latest at the Nobel Symposium 2007, is honorary member of the Swedish Medical Radiological Society and holder of the 2006 Edison Award.

Luis Martí-Bonmatí was born in 1959. He studied Medicine and Surgery in the University of Valencia (1978-1983). He specialized in radio-diagnostics. At present he is head of radiology/magnetic resonance at the University Hospital Dr. Peset and Quiron Valencia Hospital.

His main activities are focused upon clinical applications, neuroimaging and contrast enhancement.

He was member of the Council of the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB) from 1996-2004 and President of ESMRMB from 2002-2003), as well as member of the Executive Board of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Radiology (ESGAR). He is member of the editorial boards of Radiologia (Spanish Society of Radiology), European Radiology (European Society of Radiology, 1995- 2001), Magnetic Resonance Materials in Physics, Biology and Medicine and of EURORAD, and has authored more than 350 publications in national and international journals, 28 book chapters, and has edited six books.
